Key terms
  • hieroglyphics: pictures and other written symbols to represent writing
  • papyrus: An ancient form of paper
  • astronomer: a scientist who studies stars in the sky

In ancient Egypt the Egyptians used hyroglyphics. They wrote hyroglyphics on clay as so did the Mesopotamians.
The egyptians began to use hyroglyphics because they needed a way to keep track of the kingdom's growing wealth.
The meaning of ancient Egypt's hieroglyphic writing was lost after the A.D 400's. A stone named the Rosetta stone
was found by a soilder. The stone was named the Rosetta stone because in was found near Rosetta, a city in the Nile Delta
near the Meditterianian Sea.
